Some pups are VERY visible, some are very faint. The x-ray machine shoots thru 3 dimensions and squashes the image to 2 dimensions, so you are going to see some that are quite clear and some that are lighter. It's extremely hard to match up the obvious skulls with their respective spines and ribcages. There is always a lively debate between the vet and me about how many we see. He tends to err on the side of conservative, I tend to err the other way, just so I'm ready when the whelping happens.
I scanned in the x-ray and here it is. The x-ray itself (unfortunately my vet does not yet have one of those nifty digital x-ray machines) didn't fit on the scanner bed so it's pasted together. Consequently, you will see some lines thru the images. It's hard to scan an x-ray so some of this is much more clear on the actual x-ray. Below is the same x-ray with the obvious skulls circled so you can see how we have come up with a probable number of 7-8 pups.
With the exception of Puppy #8, all the circled skulls are VERY clear on the actual x-ray, altho they are not so clear on the scan above. Puppy #8 has no visible skull, but there is an "unattached" skeleton in the upper middle next to where I've circled that we suspect goes with a pup whose head was hiding behind some organ or other. There are CLEARLY 7 skulls, and probably eight pups.
