And now, the news for the weekend - THEY ARE WALKING!
The poor boogers still cannot SEE where they are going, but they are GOING and they are attempting to do so on all fours instead of on their bellies. It's really important at this point they have some good traction so they don't slip and slide. The fleecy blankets we use in their box are great for that - very easy to grip with their little toes and soft to fall on!
It's a bit like the movie Bambi where he is trying to stand on the ice... The get their heads off the ground, struggling to balance the weight of their heads and fat little bellies on their unused leg muscles (they are using the CRAWLING muscules, but not the STANDING ones). Then they gather their little rears under them and push up. Then there is a second or two where they balance, teetering, on all fours, and then, inevitably, they lose their balance and either chin or behind hits the blanket. Or, they will proudly balance on all fours, then decide to attempt locomotion... One step and the whole balance is lost and down they go.
It will not be long before they are getting around pretty well. Often the actual success of walking occurs about the time their eyes are open. This should be happening pretty soon. Thus far, you will have noticed their eyes are very tightly closed. The lids are actually sealed shut and all you have been able to see is their fur. Now, as we near the time when their eyes will be unsealed, you can see, particularly on the oranges, a dark line of pigment that is the eyerims. Soon little twinkles of their eyes as the corners begin to open. This week we should have some very cute little shots of their faces...
