The puppies first week has gone by.
Nearly all the puppies have doubled in weight during this week. Even the tiny girl puppy has gained weight every day.
They have learned to get excited every time mom steps into the box. They climb all over her, each other, and all around the box. Most of them are still crawling. If a person picks them up to hold them, they immediately begin sniffing like mad for a snack. They will persist with this until they grow sleepy. If they stray from a shirt front upon skin, they will commence to suck immediately, then give up in disgust when they get no result.
They have had their dewclaws removed, and had all their tiny nails trimmed. Their nails are so tiny that they are as fine as a needle. All that is needed is a pair of nail clippers. Keeping the nails trimmed prevents scratches to one another and to mom. Most of them protested quite a bit more about the nail trimming than they did about having their dewclaws removed.
All of their umbilical cords have dried up and fallen off.
Their eyes and ears are still tightly sealed, altho I'm beginning to see a faint dark line across their eyes which means in a few more days they will begin to open.
Rowan is looking good and seems to have plenty of milk. She will become quite engorged with milk, then feed the puppies, meanwhile bathing and nuzzling them. The puppies will start out nursing fiercely and pushing and shoving for position. Once each one has a nipple they will nurse until the quantity of milk seems inadequate to them, then begin casting about for another spot. At first there is a tidy line of pups nursing, little tails in the air, and after a few minutes they are all shuffling about, hoping for more. When Rowan gets out of the box, not a drop of milk can be squeezed from her! The puppies will all have fat round bellies and drop off to sleep.
Next week will be interesting as their eyes begin to open (normally 10-14 days) and they will begin to enter the world...
